Shubman Gill Surpasses Babar Azam In This Feat During His Stellar Run Of Form

Indian opener, Shubman Gill continued his exemplary form in One Day Internationals (ODIs) by slamming his ninth fifty-plus score for the year during the first ODI against Australia in his hometown Mohali.

Gill goes past Babar in most 50+ scores in 2023

This achievement sees him overtake Pakistan captain Babar Azam, who previously led the charts with eight 50+ scores this year.

Gill's blistering knock of 74 off just 63 balls, studded with six boundaries and two sixes, set the tone for India's chase of 277. Alongside his opening partner Ruturaj Gaikwad, Gill stitched a solid opening stand of 142 runs.

This run-fest in Mohali further solidified Gill's position as a force to be reckoned with in ODI cricket this year. With nine fifty-plus scores to his name, Gill has eclipsed even Indian skipper, Rohit Sharma, who has logged six such scores. Notably, Gill is the only batsman to have crossed the 1,000-run mark in ODIs this year, which includes four glorious centuries.

Since his debut in 2019, Gill's rise in the 50-over format has been nothing short of spectacular. He now boasts a total of 1,813 runs from just 34 ODIs, averaging an extraordinary 64.75. With a strike rate of 102.60, he is undoubtedly one of the most explosive batters in the current circuit.

To further highlight his consistency, over 1,100 of these runs have come in this year alone. It is also worth noting that this was his maiden ODI half-century against Australia, making the performance even more poetic.

Gill's current purple patch is evident in his last six ODI innings where he has registered scores of 74, 27*, 121, 19, 58, and 67*. His remarkable average of 64.75 places him in the second position in the list of best ODI batting averages.
