In a dramatic turn of events, Indian opener Shubman Gill was dismissed to a controversial catch by Cameron Green off the bowling of Scott Boland just before Tea on Day 4 of the ongoing World Test Championship Final at the Oval. Chasing a mountainous 444, Indian openers came out batting positively in the fourth innings with almost six runs per over till the end of seven overs.

Gill, who was batting on 18, facing Boland in the 8th over, got forward to defend, but the ball kicked up off the surface and took an edge through the shoulder of the bat, and Green caught it at gully with the ball very close to the ground.

The catch never seemed clean, and the on-field umpires sent it upstairs for a check. Green, who leapt towards his left one-handed, catches the ball inconclusively with no precise angle proving the fingers were underneath it.

Eventually, third umpire, Richard Kettleborough, was heard saying, “fingers underneath the ball”, and he declared Gill out on the big screen, leaving both Gill and Indian captain Rohit Sharma in utter disbelief.

The decision sparked numerous debates on social media and the commentary box. In addition, Green was booed by the Indian crowd at the venue after the second session.

Shubman Gill shares his response

Immediately after the end of the day’s play, Shubman Gill, with the help of his social media platforms, reacted and expressed his disappointment with the controversial decision made on Green’s catch to dismiss the Indian opener.

Following the wicket of Gill, Rohit was joined by Cheteshwar Pujara after tea and kept the scoreboard ticking. Unfortunately, both fell playing two uncharacteristic shots and were poorly executed, leaving India three down with only 93 on the board.

However, Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane ensured India did not lose any further wickets in the session and ended the day with 164 on the board, leaving 280 runs to be chased on the final day of the Test match.
