Indian middle order batter Ajinkya Rahane played a brilliant knock of 89 in the first innings of the ongoing World Test Championship Final against Australia at the Oval. Rohit Sharma and co. found themselves under huge trouble as Australia reduced them to 4 down with only 71 on the board, trailing a mountainous 469 total of Australia in their first innings.

Rahane, who was coming back into the Indian Test side after 18 months, repaid the faith shown in him by the Indian selectors as he stitched two crucial partnerships with the likes of Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur to keep India in the game.

While rebuilding the Indian innings on Day 2, the 35-year-old was hit on the index finger by a bouncer from Pat Cummins. Rahane was seen in pain and immediately called for medical help. However, he continued his batting for the day and went on to add 109 runs for the 7th wicket alongside Shardul Thakur on Day 3.

Resilient Rahane Kept His Focus Intact

In an Instagram post, Ajinkya Rahane’s wife, Radhika Dhopavkar, made a praise-worthy revelation about Rahane refusing to go for scans after getting hit on the finger on Day 2. The 35-year-old did not want to shift his focus from his batting and take India out of trouble.

“Despite your swollen finger, you refused a scan to protect your mindset and focused on batting, displaying incredible selflessness and determination. With unwavering resilience and commitment, you took your place at the crease, inspiring us all," Radhika posted.

Rahane went on to face 129 balls in total during his stay in the middle. He struck 11 boundaries and a six before falling 11 short of a century. However, he did manage to complete his 5000 runs in Test cricket becoming the 13th Indian to do so.

Despite such a gritting effort from Rahane, team India is still in a spot of bother as Australia managed to take a massive 173-run lead after bowling India out for 296 later on Day 3.
