Promising batter Shubman Gill is on the verge of surpassing the legendary Virat Kohli on an elite list of batters. India's newly appointed Test captain had a stellar start to the Edgbaston Test, amassing a splendid century on the first day.
The skipper's memorable outing ensured India's fightback, as the visitors finished day 1 with 310 runs for the loss of five wickets.
Gill Could Register Highest Individual Score For India At Edgbaston
Stylish right-handed batter Shubman Gill remained unbeaten on 114 at stumps on day 1. If he scores 36 more runs, Gill will become the first Indian batter to breach the 150-run mark at Edgbaston.
Currently, former captain Virat Kohli holds the record for the highest individual score by an Indian at the venue. For the unversed, Kohli hammered a sensational 149-run knock back in 2018, creating the aforementioned record.
However, Gill needs only 36 runs to surpass the talisman and register a new highest individual score.
Highest Individual Scores By Indians At Edgbaston
- Virat Kohli - 149
- Rishabh Pant - 146
- Sachin Tendulkar - 122
- Shubman Gill - 114*
- Ravindra Jadeja - 104
As mentioned above, Gill also has a golden opportunity to break the records of Rishabh Pant and the legendary Sachin Tendulkar.
The Punjab-born cricketer has maintained his purple patch ever since landing in England. Gill was one of India's most prolific performers in the first Test at Headingley, scoring a superb century in the first innings.
He followed it up with another sparkling ton at Edgbaston, breaking multiple records with the historic knock. Although India lost KL Rahul, Karun Nair, Rishabh Pant and Nitish Kumar Reddy cheaply, Gill formed a valiant stand with Ravindra Jadeja, ensuring India didn't have more hiccups before stumps on the opening day.
