Shreyas Iyer, captain of India D in the Duleep Trophy, displayed a gritty and intent-filled half-century during his team's second innings against India C. Facing a tricky situation where India D's batsmen were under pressure, Iyer chose to counter-attack rather than adopt a defensive stance.
His 44-ball 54, studded with nine fours and a six, helped India D post 236 runs. Despite India C eventually chasing down the target to secure a four-wicket victory, Iyer was pleased with his performance.
Shreyas Iyer's Intent On Making A Comeback
Shreyas Iyer, looking to regain his place in India’s red-ball squad, showcased his skills in a high-pressure situation. Having scored only 9 runs in the first innings, he bounced back impressively in the second.
With the Duleep Trophy considered an audition for selection in the upcoming India vs Bangladesh Test series, Iyer’s innings sent a clear message about his ability to handle challenging conditions.
Although the match ended in a loss for India D, Iyer remained positive about his knock.
Reflecting on his approach, he said, "It was necessary for me to show intent because their bowlers were bowling great, in the right areas and the ball was seaming as well. I just wanted to take the attack and see if we could get a decent total on board. When the ball got old, it was stopping a bit. I wanted to capitalise on my intent, but ya, I would take that fifty any day,"
Iyer also mentioned that the pitch didn’t offer much help for bowlers apart from a few patches. He expressed hope that his team would learn from their mistakes and bounce back in the next game.
Shreyas Iyer’s Test Career So Far
Shreyas Iyer has scored 811 runs in 14 Test matches for India, including five fifties and one century. His last Test appearance was in February 2024 against England.
