According to emerging reports, experienced Indian batter Shreyas Iyer will be out of action for at least three weeks due to a rib injury he sustained in the third ODI against Australia at Sydney Cricket Ground. Iyer took a magnificent catch by running backwards; however, he fell awkwardly on the ground, injuring himself in the process.

Shreyas Iyer injury: India batter could take 3 weeks for recovery

After helping Harshit Rana dismiss Alex Carey with an outstanding catch, Shreyas Iyer fell awkwardly on the ground. He complained of severe pain and discomfort around his stomach region and was eventually taken to the hospital. A PTI report later revealed that there had been a jerk in his left rib cage, and Iyer will require at least three weeks to recover from it.

A source close to the development added that Shreyas Iyer will report to the BCCI Centre of Excellence, where he will undergo further assessment before receiving formal fitness clearance to return to competitive cricket.

"Shreyas was taken to the hospital for scans during the match itself. As per initial diagnosis, there has been a jerk and he will have to be out of action for minimum three weeks. He will have to report to the Centre of Excellence on his return. Further reports are awaited before one can conclude if he will require more time for recovery," a BCCI source was quoted as saying by PTI.

Rib injury puts Shreyas Iyer in doubt for IND vs SA ODIs

After losing the Australia series by 1-2, India will take on South Africa in a three-match ODI series, starting November 30, on home soil. If Iyer is diagnosed with a hairline fracture, his comeback will be further delayed. So, there are serious doubts about the Mumbaikar's participation in the high-voltage series.

"If it is a hairline fracture then it might take longer. It is too early to say. If it is three weeks before RTP (Return To Play), then there is a chance that it could be touch and go before November 30," the BCCI source concluded.

Shreyas Iyer looked impressive in the ODI series against Australia, scoring 61 runs in the second game at Adelaide Oval. He is the backbone of India's middle order, which is why his absence might prove costly for the home team in the South Africa series.
