India star cricketer Shreyas Iyer is expected to lead team India A in the upcoming two unofficial Test matches against Australia A. The four-day games will be played at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow, while the three one-day matches will take place at Green Park in Kanpur. The Australian team is set to arrive in India next week for this series.
Selectors Eye Top Performers From Duleep Trophy
Apart from Iyer, the selectors are also keeping an eye on players performing well in the ongoing Duleep Trophy in Bengaluru, according to Cricbuzz. Those under consideration include all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, top-order batter Abhimanyu Easwaran, who has previously captained India A, and the talented B Sai Sudharsan. Other names like Narayan Jagadeesan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Rajat Patidar are also in the mix for selection.
Talking about Iyer, the Mumbai batter has represented India in 14 Test matches, scoring a century and five half-centuries. However, he has not featured in red-ball cricket for India since February 2024, when he last played against England. Despite this, he has been in excellent form this year.
Iyer was part of Indian team that lifted the Champions Trophy in Dubai and he also guided Punjab Kings to the final of the 2025 IPL season. With 604 runs in 17 matches at a strike rate of 175.07, his batting stood out, making him one of the best performers of the tournament.
Because of his strong IPL and domestic form, many fans expected Iyer to be included in India’s Asia Cup squad. However, his name was missing when the team was announced.
At present, Iyer is playing for West Zone in the semi-final of the Duleep Trophy against Central Zone in Bengaluru. Earlier this year, he was left out of the India A side that played red-ball matches against the England Lions. But now, with the series against Australia A approaching, he seems set to return in a major role, possibly as captain of the India A team.
