Former India star Yuvraj Singh believes golf could have made him an even better cricketer. He joked that if he had taken up golf earlier, he might have scored at least 3,000 more runs in international cricket.
Now retired, Yuvraj enjoys playing golf and says the game is great for relaxation and focus. He has advised his younger “students,” Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma, to take up golf, especially during the IPL, as a way to stay mentally fresh.
Yuvraj Singh Advises Gill And Abhishek To Play Golf
Yuvraj, speaking at the launch of the IGPL tour schedule on Thursday, explained that cricketers today have very tight schedules, which makes it difficult for them to try other sports.
"Now the rules have changed in international cricket. In cricket, you don't get another opportunity. In golf, you play a bad shot, you can still hit a good shot and come back on the hole."
Yuvraj Singh, who has over 11,500 international runs to his name, admitted that if he had started playing golf earlier in his career, he might have added another 3,000 runs to his tally.
"I would have scored 3,000 more runs," said Yuvraj.
The former all-rounder also pointed out that too much practice isn’t always the best approach for cricketers.
"I tell all the young cricketers to try and play golf, hit the ball, see how you feel. Because sometimes too much practice is also not good for you. Sometimes when you're not scoring runs, you want to practice more, and with golf as well, you want to hit more balls. But sometimes it's good to relax," he added.
Other legends like Kapil Dev have also spoken about how golf could have improved their cricket careers. Many former greats, including Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, and Brian Lara, are known to enjoy golf after retirement.
Meanwhile, Shubman Gill, who has been named India’s T20I vice-captain, and Abhishek Sharma will next be seen in action at the Asia Cup 2025. The tournament will run from September 9 to 28, with India starting their campaign against UAE.
