In the latest development, Shreyas Iyer, the star Indian batter, has reportedly been cleared to take part in the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand, starting on Sunday, January 11. Iyer suffered a significant spleen injury during the Sydney ODI match against Australia, and he had internal bleeding, and was immediately taken to the hospital.
However, in news that will excite the Indian fans before the all-important ODI series, India’s number 4 is fit and raring to go as he gets the fitness clearance. According to reports by journalist Abhishek Tripathi, VVS Laxman, the head of BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE), had personally written to the chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, informing him about Iyer’s fitness clearance.
The Indian batter was already included in the ODI squad for the New Zealand series, but his participation relied on the fitness clearance, which he eventually received ahead of the tour.
How Shreyas Iyer got injured at first place
Shreyas Iyer, the star batter, suffered a spleen injury during the Sydney ODI vs Australia. He had a near-fatal fall while attempting a catch to dismiss Alex Carey in the SCG game. He landed awkwardly and looked visibly in pain as the player was rushed to the hospital and was admitted to the ICU.
He underwent extensive tests and it was revealed that Iyer had a spleen laceration, an injury that caused internal bleeding as the batter received immediate treatment. His vitals dropped significantly, but the Indian player received emergency treatment as he recovered.
Iyer replaces Gaikwad in the team
During Iyer’s injury recovery, India included Ruturaj Gaikwad in the playing XI for the South Africa series, and the CSK captain responded with a brilliant hundred in the second ODI as he had occupied the number 4 slot with his brilliance.
However, with Iyer returning to the squad, the selectors eventually decided to remove Gaikwad as the batter was removed despite delivering the goods in the South Africa series.
The 31-year-old is set to be included in the playing XI vs New Zealand and he will occupy his favourite number 4 slot in his favourite format.
