Sri Lanka's star batter Kusal Mendis delivered a scintillating knock in the second ODI against Australia at the R. Premadasa Stadium, bringing up his fifth ODI century in style. The dramatic moment unfolded in the 43rd over of Sri Lanka’s innings when Mendis nudged a delivery from Aaron Hardie for a single, reaching the coveted three-figure mark off 113 balls. His well-constructed innings was decorated with 11 boundaries. As soon as he completed the run, Mendis took off his helmet and acknowledged the roaring applause from his teammates and spectators.
Kusal Mendis Completes His Century In Style
This century also marked Mendis’ 15th international hundred across formats. His composed approach and shot selection played a crucial role in guiding Sri Lanka’s innings, and ensuring the team had a solid foundation against a strong Australian bowling attack.
However, his innings came to an end immediately after reaching the milestone, as leg-spinner Adam Zampa struck on the first ball of his new spell.
Mendis, looking to capitalise on his century, attempted a slog sweep off Adam Zampa's delivery pitched on the middle stump. However, he failed to generate enough power, sending the ball straight into the hands of Matt Short at deep midwicket.
Mendis' Century Guides Sri Lanka After Early Setback
Earlier, after winning the toss and opting to bat, Sri Lanka faced an early blow when Aaron Hardie removed opener Pathum Nissanka. However, Nishan Madushka played a crucial supporting role, scoring a patient 51 off 70 balls. Together, Madushka and Mendis stitched a vital partnership, stabilising Sri Lanka’s innings before Zampa’s breakthrough disrupted their momentum.
However, at the time of writing, Sri Lanka are at 247 runs at the loss of four wickets. Captain Charith Asalanka and Janith Liyanage are batting at the crease.
