Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan overcame team’s first-innings controversy by pumping out a match-winning 82 against Sri Lanka later in the game. The cricketer shared 169 runs together with number three Najmul Hossain Shanto, as Bangladesh cruised towards a comfortable win in their World Cup 2023 dead-rubber with nearly nine overs to spare.

Apart from claiming the ‘Player of the Match’ award, captain Shakib also surpassed Indian skipper Rohit Sharma, and inched closer to fellow batting greats Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar for a huge World Cup record.

Shakib Al Hasan surpasses Rohit Sharma’s World Cup record

Bangladesh legend Shakib Al Hasan tonked his 65th fifty-plus score in ODIs through the course of his match-winning effort against Sri Lanka at the 2023 World Cup. His innings also marked his 13th score of 50 or more in ODI World Cup matches, thus taking him past Indian captain Rohit Sharma and Sri Lankan great Kumar Sangakkara for the all-time record.

Sangakkara retired following the conclusion of the 2015 World Cup with 12 fifty-plus scores to his name, while Sharma levelled up with the Sri Lankan keeper’s feat during the course of the ongoing tournament in India.

Shakib Al Hasan went past both, and currently stands only behind India’s World Cup 2023 stalwart Virat Kohli (14) and former cricketer and tournament’s highest run-getter Sachin Tendulkar.

Tendulkar minted 21 scores of 50 or more, and converted six of them for centuries spanning six different editions of the competition during his playing days.

Shakib Al Hasan, meanwhile, is unlikely to add another fifty to his illustrious tally as he has been opted out of the 2023 World Cup owing to an injury. Bangladesh is set to face Australia in their final league fixture on November 11, and Shakib’s current age (36) indicates that the cricketer may well have played his last ODI World Cup match already.
