In a massive setback for Big Bash League (BBL) club Adelaide Strikers, Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan has pulled out of the upcoming 2023-2024 edition. Khan, 25, will undergo a minor operation for a back injury, which sees the leg-spinner pull out of the league, which starts December 7.

The star player recently played in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, claiming 11 wickets in the tournament featuring in all nine matches for his nation.

Strikers GM, Cricket Tim Nielsen expressed how big of a loss Khan's unavailability is for the club while also wishing their priced acquisition speedy recovery. The club in consultation with the coach and other staff members will announce a suitable replacement for Khan soo.

Here's what Nielsen said

“Rashid is a beloved member of the Strikers and a fan favourite who has been with us for seven years, so he will be extremely missed this summer. Rashid loves Adelaide and the Strikers, and we know how much he loves playing in the BBL, and we support him as he has treatment for this injury to ensure his long-term involvement in the game,"

Since making his BBL debut for Striker back in 2017, the leg-spinner has picked up 98 wickets at an average of 17.51, and helped the Adelaide-based club win their maiden BBL title in 2018.

Strikers, however, will retain their rights over Khan for upcoming BBL seasons. Earlier, Khan withdrew from The Hundred 2023 as well citing World Cup preparation.
