In a monumental move, IPL has decided to put a salary cap on foreign players in order to increase the influence of Indian players in the world’s biggest franchise league. Here’s a detailed explanation of the new auction amendment.

IPL released retention rules for the upcoming mega auction after a series of meetings and countless discussions with the franchise owners.

With weeks left for the mega auction, the governing body disclosed a brief list of new rules introduced which contained several amendments in the existing rules as well.

IPL to curb foreign players salaries after mega auction!

In one such interesting rule, IPL has decided to cap foreign players’ salary to curb the imbalance of demand-supply in the mini-auction.

The policy that will come into effect in 2026 states that any overseas player’s maximum fee won’t exceed that of the highest retention price or auction price of the preceding mega auction, whichever is lower.

Hypothetically, suppose that Virat Kohli gets retained for INR 18 Cr and Ishan Kishan’s mega auction bid touches INR 16 Cr. Then, in the 2026 mini-auction, no overseas player will receive more than INR 16 Cr in salary.

Subsequently, if Ishan Kishan’s bid scales INR 20 Cr in the above-mentioned scenario, then the overseas player’s maximum fee bracket will be INR 18 Cr.

Notably, despite the salary cap, bidding for a foreign player won’t stop until the fight is reduced to a single bidder. The final amount of the bid will be charged to the franchise. While the preset cap amount will go to the overseas player, the remaining balance will be claimed by the BCCI who wish to use the surplus money on player welfare.

Earlier, BCCI announced an increase in the player fees for the upcoming IPL seasons, given a certain player meets several criteria.

MS Dhoni set to be retained as uncapped player?

In a significant development meant to facilitate MS Dhoni’s stay in IPL, the governing body reintroduced the uncapped player rule for retired cricketers.

The reintroduced policy states that any Indian player who hasn’t featured in an international game in the past five years can be retained in the uncapped category for a lower price.

Hence, MS Dhoni, who last played an international game in 2019, falls into this bracket, and CSK is most likely to retain him as an uncapped player in the upcoming mega auction.
