The BCCI has finally released the retention rules for the 18th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025). This time around, the teams will be allowed to retain as many as six players. They can retain these players via the traditional retention method or by using the RTM card during the mega auction.

A deeper look into the retention rules also reveals that each franchise will have to retain one uncapped player and can retain a maximum of two uncapped players. The rule that a player who has retired from international cricket for more than five years can be retained as an uncapped player has been brought back. However, there are no limitations on the number of overseas players that can be retained.

Considering these rules, here is how CSK might strategise its retentions ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction.

5 Capped Players of CSK for IPL 2025

Ruturaj Gaikwad

The young Indian batter was handed over the captaincy responsibilities of the team last year after MS Dhoni stepped down from the role. Ruturaj Gaikwad has established himself as an important part of the CSK batting in the last few years. His newfound responsibilities and importance in the batting lineup will induce management to make him the first to retain him.

Ravindra Jadeja

The Indian all-rounder has been an important part of the CSK set-up since he arrived in the team. Ravindra Jadeja has been the hero of many memorable CSK wins with his impactful batting, bowling, and fielding abilities. Given the contributions he can make and the impact he can leave in the team, Ravindra Jadeja is expected to be the second retention of CSK.

Shivam Dube

CSK brought the Indian all-rounder during the IPL 2022 auction. Shivam Dube's career has risen since he arrived in the team. CSK has used him as a spin hitter in the middle overs, and he has excelled in the role. His performances in the IPL also earned him a place in the Indian team. The player's utility factor makes him one of the top three retentions of CSK for IPL 2025.

Devon Conway

The New Zealand opener has been integral to CSK's batting in the last few seasons. His understanding with Ruturaj Gaikwad is crucial for the team, as the duo has been the most successful opening pair in the franchise's history. Devon Conway's consistency and stability in the top order make him one of the key cogs of the team, and hence, they will be looking to retain him.

Matheesha Pathirana

The young Sri Lankan pacer has become an asset for CSK. Matheesha Pathirana has evolved as a death-over bowler under the guidance of MS Dhoni. He was one of the key factors of CSK's IPL 2023 winning run. The management will look to keep one of their key assets in the bowling department in the team, and hence, Pathirana will be one of the five capped retentions of CSK.

MS Dhoni

MS Dhoni has become simultaneous to the CSK franchise. The push from CSK to bring the retention rule, where a player who has retired for more than five years from international cricket will be considered an uncapped player, was to retain the icon. MS Dhoni's leadership, guidance, and mentorship are things that CSK wants to use to groom the future group of players; hence, he will be the one retained in the mandatory uncapped slot for players.
