Pakistan have announced its 17-member squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, but two big names are missing, Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) revealed the team on August 17, which will also play in the tri-series against Afghanistan and the UAE.
With Babar and Rizwan not in the squad, Salman Ali Agha has been given the captaincy, while Mohammad Haris will take charge as the wicketkeeper. Star fast bowler Shaheen Afridi and opener Fakhar Zaman are included, but the absence of the experienced duo has opened doors for new talent.
The Asia Cup, which features both ODIs and T20Is, will likely see three fresh faces making their mark for Pakistan.
1. Saim Ayub
The young left-hander has already played for Pakistan, but this will be his first Asia Cup. With Babar and Rizwan missing, Saim is expected to open the innings.
Saim recently returned from injury during the Bangladesh series, though he only managed 28 runs in 3 innings there. But he bounced back strongly against the West Indies in T20Is, scoring 130 runs in 3 matches at an average of 43.33. He is likely to open alongside Sahibzada Farhan.
2. Hasan Nawaz
Hasan Nawaz has been one of Pakistan’s most talked-about young batters. This Asia Cup will be his first time playing in the tournament, and his recent performances suggest he’s ready.
In the ODI series against West Indies, he scored 112 runs in 3 innings, while in T20Is he made 79 runs at a strike rate of 164.58. Despite having a short T20I career so far, he has already scored 339 runs in 14 innings, including one century and one fifty.
His consistent performances make him a strong candidate to debut in this year's Asia Cup.
3. Sufiyan Muqeem
Pakistan’s bowling attack will get an interesting addition with Sufiyan Muqeem, a left-arm wrist spinner, a style of bowling rarely seen in international cricket. He will also be playing his first Asia Cup.
In the recent white-ball series, he picked up 1 wicket in ODIs and 3 wickets in T20Is. Overall, he has 21 wickets in 13 T20Is with an impressive economy rate of 6.75, showing both accuracy and skill.
At 25 years old, Sufiyan brings variety to Pakistan’s spin department and could be a game-changer.
