The excitement around India’s Asia Cup 2025 team announcement is growing, but there’s confusion about how the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will reveal the squad. The selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, is meeting in Mumbai on Tuesday to finalise the 15-member team for the Asia Cup.
According to Times of India reports, the BCCI is unsure whether to hold a press conference for the announcement. Some sources even claim there will be no press meet at all, and the squad list will just be released online through the official website.
Meanwhile, the team selection itself is creating debates. The big positive is that star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is fit and available for the biggest sports competition in Asia. The 31-year-old recently played in the Test series against England, where he impressed with 14 wickets in three matches.
On the other hand, India Test captain Shubman Gill may not make it into the T20 Asia Cup squad. Selectors feel Gill doesn’t fit into India’s current T20 strategy, and they prefer sticking to players who have been part of the setup since the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Gill last featured in a T20I in July 2024 against Sri Lanka. Since then, India have faced Bangladesh, South Africa, and England without selecting him. Despite his recent success in Tests, including Gill would require a reshuffle of the batting order, something the team is keen to avoid.
Suryakumar Yadav, who has cleared his fitness test, is expected to continue as captain for the Asia Cup. Final discussions between selectors, the team management, and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia will be held on August 19 before the official announcement.
The Asia Cup will take place in United Arab Emirates (UAE) from September 9 to 28, 2025.
