India Squad For Asia Cup 2025: Selection Debate Between Shreyas Iyer, Rinku Singh And Sundar

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is all set to announce the Indian squad for the Asia Cup 2025 on Tuesday, August 19, and as always, the build-up is filled with speculation. While most of the squad looks settled, the biggest talking point ahead of the announcement is about the final spot in the 15-member team.

Indian Express reports suggest that the choice is likely to come down to Shreyas Iyer or Washington Sundar, with both players making strong cases in their own way.

Shreyas Iyer Or Sundar In Line For 15th Spot

The selectors, led by Ajit Agarkar, are expected to retain Suryakumar Yadav as captain. However, the last position in the squad has sparked a debate. The discussion is whether the team should strengthen its batting lineup with a specialist like Shreyas Iyer, Rinku Singh, or Riyan Parag, or add more balance with an all-rounder such as Washington Sundar, who can contribute in both departments of the game.

Shreyas Iyer’s case is built on his reputation as a reliable middle-order batter. Known for his calmness against spin and his leadership skills, Iyer has led two different IPL franchises to the finals in consecutive seasons, proving that he thrives under pressure.

His presence would give India more depth in batting, especially in the tricky middle overs. However, one drawback is that Iyer has been out of the T20 international setup for quite some time.

Iyer's last appearance in the format was back in December 2023, and since Gautam Gambhir took over as head coach in July 2024, he hasn’t been part of the squad.

On the other hand, Washington Sundar offers something very different. His value lies in his ability to adapt to the game’s needs, whether it is holding the innings together, hitting crucial runs down the order, or providing control with his off-spin.

Notably, Sundar was also a member of the India side that lifted the ICC Champions Trophy in Dubai earlier this year, which adds to his credentials. Moreover, head coach Gautam Gambhir has often spoken about the importance of having depth in both batting and bowling, and Sundar fits perfectly into that philosophy.

The Asia Cup 2025 will be played in the T20 format and begins on September 9 in the UAE. India will kick off their campaign a day later, on September 10, against the host nation.
