Franchise based T20 competitions like South Africa’s SA20, UAE’s ILT20, Bangladesh’s BPL among others might well have to adjust their schedule once again next year, this time to align with a potential window of the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup. Organizers of these competition’s also changed their playing windows this year in a bid to give competing players a breathing space before the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan and in the UAE.
League organizers to reschedule 2026 editions
Earlier this month, Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced the dates of next year’s SA20 season. Interestingly, the 2026 season of the SA20 will launch from December 26 onwards, as opposed to its usual starting date of the second week of January every year. Bringing up the league a couple of weeks upwards from its usual date means that the South African national team will be making way from its traditional ‘Boxing Day’ Test at home this time around.
With several reports indicating that the 2026 T20 World Cup will be launching from February 10 onwards next year, one can expect other cricket boards to follow CSA’s module of altering the scheduling dates of their franchise-based T20 competitions.
It is worth noting that organizers of several T20 tournaments also made the necessary alterations to their schedules in a bid to comply with the upcoming 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. For instance, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) postponed its annual PSL season by a month, and as a result, PSL 2025 will now be coinciding with BCCI’s cash-rich IPL.
Even the ongoing BPL 2025 season had commenced on December 30 instead of the tournament’s usual mid-January date.
As reported by Cricbuzz, the 2026 T20 World Cup next year might well impact Cricket Australia’s scheduling plans for the Big Bash League as well.
The 2026 T20 World Cup will be a co-hosted event between India and Sri Lanka, and the tournament will likely be played between February 10 and March 8.
