Mitchell Swepson has signed a three-year deal with Melbourne Stars on the last day of BBL’s first player movement window. The Australian leg-spinner previously spent 10 BBL seasons for the Brisbane Heat, having made his tournament debut during the 2015-16 edition.
The 31-year-old even served as the acting captain for the Heat during the recently-concluded BBL 2024-25 season.
Mitchell Swepson moves to Melbourne Stars
Australia’s 2021 T20 World Cup winner Mitchell Swepson has signed a three-year deal with Melbourne Stars after spending a decade of his BBL career at Brisbane Heat. Swepson played a crucial role in Brisbane Heat’s title-winning campaign of 2023-24, picking up 10 wickets in nine innings at an average of 20.40.
However, the cricketer underwent a below-par BBL season in 2024-25, where he claimed just four wickets in nine matches at an expensive bowling average of 71.50. Nonetheless, Swepson remains one of the most experienced spin bowlers in Australia’s T20 circuit.
Melbourne Stars General Manager Blair Crouch welcomed Swepson into the team’s BBL setup, and praised the 31-year-old for his experience as a T20 player. Blair said:
"We've been on the lookout for a high performing domestic spinner and Mitch will form an important part of the Stars attack over the next 3 years. Mitch is a very experienced T20 player in Australia, will provide valuable leadership and support to Marcus Stoinis."
With an experience of 95 T20 matches, including 87 in BBL (all for Brisbane Heat), Mitchell Swepson has claimed 83 wickets in the format at an average of 29.45. He played eight T20Is for Australia since his international debut in June 2018, but has not donned the national jersey since October 2022.
Notably, he was a part of Australia’s T20 World Cup winning team in the UAE back in late-2021.
