Ryan Burl backs Zimbabwe to deliver something spectacular in T20 WC 2022

Zimbabwe all-rounder Ryan Burl believes Zimbabwe are in a good headspace and are confident of a strong showing in the T20I World Cup 2022.

The Chevrons have delivered clinical performances on most occasions this year. In July, they won all their four league matches of the T20 WC Qualifiers, and then followed it up by winning ODI and T20I series against Bangladesh.

Although they failed to taste success against India, it helped them to prepare against top-ranked teams.

After losing their first two ODI games, the Regis Chakabva-led side secured their only third victory after four decades against Australia. The key architect to this victory was Ryan Burl, who wreaked havoc with figures of 5/10.

Burl thinks the new leadership under head coach Dave Houghton and batting coach Lance Klusener has guided the team onto the right path.

"The last four months have been extremely successful and positive for us as a Zimbabwe cricket unit," Burl told the BBC World Service's Stumped podcast.

"[We will] go out there trying to hopefully do something spectacular.

"David Houghton has just come on board [as coach] and Lance Klusener has been a new addition. Things are in the right direction and we are reciprocating that with some positive results as well. We are on the way forward."

Zimbabwe's last T20 WC appearance

In 2019, Zimbabwe were suspended from the International Cricket Council due to government's interference with the board's administration. Due to this reason, they failed to compete in the T20I World Cup 2021.

Their last appearance in the T20 WC was in the 2016 edition, wherein they secured two wins in three league matches. However, they could not reach the Super 10 stage.
