Our main focus is the next World Cup: BCB President

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hassan Papon has shockingly revealed that they are not expecting a magical performance from the team in the T20 WC 2022 and are instead preparing for the next iteration.

Lately, the Bangladesh T20I team sustained a 0-2 loss against West Indies, while losing 1-2 to the Zimbabwe team. To rub the salt in the wounds, the Tigers could not qualify for the Super-four stage of the Asia Cup due to losses in both league matches.

After the leadership of Mahmudullah could not help them taste success in the bilateral series, Shakib Al Hasan was chosen as the leader in the Asia Cup. However, the performances remained the same, and the team's morale is certainly down.

Furthermore, the experienced campaigner Mushfiqur Rahim's retirement ahead of the showpiece event is also a worrying cause for Bangladesh.

In this regard, Papon thinks they have not adapted well to the shortest format, and are planning to make certain changes, to form a strong team for the next edition of the T20 World Cup in 2024.

"Our main focus is the next World Cup, not this one. You can't change everything overnight. We are planning long-term and trying to prepare a squad for the next World Cup. Even if the upcoming World Cup does not go well for us, I won't be disappointed. We are hoping to form a squad in the next six to eight months," Papon told media on Tuesday.

In the T20 WC 2022, Bangladesh are tied up with India, Pakistan and South Africa in Group 2, while other two teams are yet to be decided.
