In a significant development, T Dilip is set to return as the fielding coach after reportedly being reinstated following the personal intervention of Rohit Sharma. According to Cricbuzz, Rohit  played a crucial role in persuading both the BCCI and head coach Gautam Gambhir to bring back the Hyderabad-based coach for another stint.

Dilip had earlier been shown the door, along with batting coach Abhishek Nayar and few other support staff members. The BCCI wanted to overhaul the backroom setup under Gambhir’s leadership. However, the board's failure to find a suitable foreign replacement for the fielding role prompted a rethink, eventually leading to his re-appointment on a one-year temporary contract.

Rohit Sharma's Special Request To Gautam Gambhir

According to Cricbuzz, sources close to the development confirmed that Rohit Sharma personally requested Gambhir to retain Dilip, citing the coach’s familiarity with the players and his positive impact on the team during his tenure.

“Dilip is a good coach, who served the team well for over three years (from 2021). He knows most of these cricketers very closely. So, to have him on board for a big series (vs England) will do the team only good. So, there is no point in bringing in a fresh name at this stage, and Dilip is very popular with players too," a source close to the development told news agency PTI.

It is believed that the BCCI was actively exploring foreign candidates to fill the fielding coach role, but with limited time and availability, no suitable names occured. As a result, the board opted for bringing back Dilip. It is important to mention that he will resume duties beginning with India’s high-profile five-match Test series against England.

Meanwhile, preparations for the England series are already underway. The India A squad, along with several members of the senior Test team have reached England. Only Akash Deep is yet to join the group but is expected to arrive ahead of the first unofficial Test against England Lions, scheduled from May 30 to June 2 in Canterbury.
