Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) etched their name into the Indian Premier League (IPL) history books on Tuesday evening, pulling off a record-breaking feat that no team had previously accomplished. In their final league match of the season, RCB pulled off a jaw-dropping six-wicket win against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) while chasing a massive 228-run target.
Interestingly, RCB’s run chase became only the second 200-plus total successfully chased down at the Lucknow venue in T20 history. The first came just over a week ago when SRH chased down 206 against LSG.
Stand-in skipper Jitesh Sharma, played the innings of his IPL career. The explosive wicketkeeper-batter hammered an unbeaten 85 off just 47 deliveries, steering RCB to their highest-ever successful run-chase and the third-highest successful chase in IPL history.
History Created By RCB In IPL 2025
With this emphatic victory, RCB completed a clean sweep of all their away league matches a first in IPL history for any team in a season following the traditional home-and-away format. They won seven out of seven away games, the most by any team in IPL history.
It is important to mention that in 2012, Mumbai Indians (MI) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), both recorded seven away wins but suffered at least one defeat.
This victory over LSG also elevated RCB to second place in the league standings their best finish since the 2016 season when they last reached the final. They closed the league stage with 19 points, equal to Punjab Kings, but a slightly inferior net run rate (NRR) placed them behind the Shreyas Iyer-led side.
This strong finish sets up a blockbuster Qualifier 1 clash between RCB and PBKS on Thursday, with a direct spot in the IPL 2025 final on the line. Meanwhile, Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians will face off in the Eliminator on Friday.
