In a significant development, Former Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma scripted a new chapter in IPL history on Sunday. He surpassed  Virat Kohli to become the player with the most Player of the Match (POTM) awards in the league's history. The milestone came during the high-voltage El Clasico clash against CSK, where Rohit produced a scintillating unbeaten knock of 76 runs off just 45 balls.

Rohit Overtakes Kohli In Player Of The Match Tally

Rohit's innings came at a strike rate of 168.89 and powered MI to a resounding nine-wicket victory. It was not only his first half-century of this season but also a much-needed return to form for the veteran batter after a string of low scores in previous matches.

With this match-winning effort, Rohit clinched his 20th Player of the Match award in IPL history, edging past Kohli, who has 19 from 260 appearances. Rohit achieved the feat in his 264th IPL match.

Rohit Sharma Surpasses Shikhar Dhawan

In addition to his POTM record, Rohit also leapfrogged Shikhar Dhawan to become the second-highest run-scorer in IPL history with 6,786 runs, trailing only Kohli in the all-time list. So far in IPL 2025, Rohit has scored 158 runs in seven innings at an average of 26.33 and an strike rate of 154.90, with one half-century to his name.
