Rohit Sharma Could Be Replaced By 'This' Player in T20Is Says Virender Sehwag

Following India's historic T20 World Cup victory at Barbados, the cricket world was left gloomy by the announcement of Indian skipper Rohit Sharma's retirement from the T20I format on Saturday, June 29.

While it was not a sudden shock, fans were emotional as both Rohit and Virat Kohli retired from T20Is. This left the fans in eager anticipation: Who will be India's next T20I skipper?

Veteran Indian cricketer, Virender Sehwag believes that it won't be Hardik Pandya or Jasprit Bumrah who will take charge as the next Indian captain. Instead, India will go with a much younger choice, and Shubman Gill could be the next T20I skipper for the Men In Blue.

While talking about the Gujarat Titans' skipper, Sehwag said that Gill is a long-haul player. Although he was unlucky to miss out on the T20 World Cup 2024, he is the right choice to be Rohit Sharma's successor.

Here's what he said:

"Shubman Gill is for the long haul. He's a player who plays all three formats. He's had a great last year. He was unlucky to miss out on the 2024 T20 World Cup. According to me, it is the right decision to make him the captain. When Rohit Sharma leaves tomorrow, Shubman Gill will be his right replacement for captaincy," Sehwag said on Cricbuzz.

A shift towards the next generation can be evidently seen as India recently announced the squad for the five-match Zimbabwe tour in July and the Indian opener has been named as the skipper.

While, it did miss some notable inclusions like Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan, Rajat Patidar; it interestingly also included some fresh faces like Abhishek Sharma and Riyan Parag.
