On March 20, just two days before IPL 2025 begins, Rajasthan Royals announced that Riyan Parag will captain the team for the first three matches of the season. This decision comes after Sanju Samson chose to delay his return as captain until he fully recovers. While Samson is fit to bat, he is not yet ready to take on wicketkeeping duties.
Riyan Parag Becomes Youngest Captain In IPL
With this appointment, Riyan Parag has now become the youngest captain in IPL history. He’ll take charge in the opening match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 23, followed by home games against defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders on March 26 and five-time champions Chennai Super Kings on March 30.
Samson To Play As A Pure Batsman
Sanju Samson will continue playing as a specialist batsman until he is fully fit to keep wickets and field. His injury occurred during India’s T20I series against England in February when a Jofra Archer delivery struck his finger in the fifth match, forcing him to leave the field.
He later underwent surgery and has been recovering at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. Once he is completely fit, he will return as Rajasthan Royals’ captain.
