The rumoured rift between Pakistan's current captain, Babar Azam and former captain, Shaheen Afridi has garnered significant attention. However, Pakistan's assistant coach Azhar Mahmood has stepped in to deny these claims, countering former Pakistan speedster Wasim Akram's assertion that the two are not on speaking terms.

Azhar Mahmood, a 49-year-old veteran, also criticized those who believe players shouldn't have lives outside of cricket. Following India's narrow 6-run victory over Pakistan, which sparked controversies over the defeat, Mahmood clarified the situation.


Here's what Azhar Mahmood said:

"Wasim must have said that, but I don't know. I didn't see it. Shaheen and Babar are definitely talking, they are good friends. They are both part of the Pakistan team. We have not lost because of anyone, it is our mistake too." 

When asked why players weren't facing the media in press conferences, Mahmood explained that the support staff shares responsibility for the team's performance and is equally accountable for defeats.

"We are not hiding any players, everyone is there. Everything is there. I said earlier that we are a team. Obviously, we're sitting here, and it's our responsibility. We're not delivering. That's why I'm sitting here.""Yesterday, Gary (Kirsten) was sitting here. So definitely, it's not like we're hiding a player. They're part of us."

Mahmood, chief selector Wahab Riaz, and skipper Babar Azam were spotted enjoying dinner at a restaurant after the loss to India, which provoked angry reactions from fans. Mahmood defended their outing when questioned by a Pakistani reporter.

"You were there. I'm telling you; you were there. I saw you there too," Mahmood replied to the reporter.

There were reports that the Pakistan team has two factions, one led by skipper Babar and the other by Shaheen. However, after the assistant coach's denial, it seems there is no division.

Pakistan will now face Canada in their third fixture of the tournament at Nassau County Stadium on June 11.
