In a bold move to keep the title defence moving in the right direction, Rangpur Riders have decided to keep Mickey Arthur connected to their team despite his other coaching commitments. A report from ESPNCricinfo has confirmed the development.
The South African will not be present in Guyana during the Global Super League 2025 due to his commitments as coach of Derbyshire. Thus, to tackle this tricky situation, the franchise has decided to keep him connected virtually.
Rangpur Riders Make Unusual Arrangement To Keep Winning Mentality Intact
Arthur was the coach of Rangpur Riders in the inaugural edition of the Global Super League, which they won. He was also part of all the planning for the second season, according to Shanian Taneem, Rangpur Riders' team director. However, due to his Derbyshire commitments, Greg Smith has taken over the role of head coach as he enjoys the full trust of their guiding force, Mickey Arthur.
"As the English County Championship is ongoing and Mickey is coaching Derbyshire County Cricket Club, he is unavailable at the moment. Therefore, we are appointing Greg Smith as our head coach. He is someone Mickey fully trusts. Mickey will stay connected with the players and continue to offer his input. Greg will lead the team under Mickey's guidance," Shanian Taneem was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.
"Mickey Arthur was our head coach during the previous Global Super League and the last edition of the Bangladesh Premier League. We have strong confidence in his abilities. While forming our squad, we remained in constant touch with him and discussed which players would perform well on Guyana's pitches," Shanian added.
Thus, Mickey Arthur will be handling Derbyshire and Rangpur Riders simultaneously. He will be 7500 km away from Guyana, but he is likely to play a crucial role in all their major decisions. The renowned coach performed a similar role in 2023 as Pakistan's team director, which shows the trust he enjoys in the cricketing world.
The Global Super League 2025 will start on July 10, and the defending champions, Rangpur Riders, will welcome back their winning core for the second season. Nurul Hasan will continue to lead them but the only problem is that they will miss the services of Shakib Al Hasan due to political issues who was earlier expected to play a big role for them this season.
