On June 3, Royal Challengers Bengaluru finally ended their long wait for an IPL trophy by beating Punjab Kings in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The victory brought a wave of happiness throughout the country, leading to widespread celebrations in Bengaluru city.
On the next day, the RCB team was felicitated at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. However, the event of an IPL win turned out to be a disaster as 11 people lost their lives in a stampede while trying to catch a glimpse of their favourite cricketers.
The tragedy quickly changed the mood of the country. Subsequently, some RCB employees were arrested by the police, including the Marketing and Revenue head, Nikhil Sosale.
The arrest happened on June 6 and after hearing the arguments from both sides, the High Court granted interim release to Sosale on Thursday, June 12, according to a report from Cricbuzz. However, he is not allowed to leave the country and has been asked to surrender his passport.
Police Blames RCB In Bengaluru Stampede FIR
Along with Nikhil Sosale, two employees of DNA Entertainment Network, Kiran Kumar and Sunil Mathew were also arrested on June 6. The police FIR stated that the deaths of 11 people and injuries to 56 individuals occurred due to the announcement of free passes on RCB's official website, following their win in the final of IPL 2025.
"Lakhs of people gathered at the stadium for the programme and the crowd became uncontrollable due to the confusion of organisers on how to allow the people into the stadium which has a seating capacity of around 35,000. The stampede incident and chaos occurred at gate no. 2, 2A, 6, 7, 15,17, 18, 20, and 21, resulting in the death of 11 people and injuring 56. The gathering of lakhs of people outside the stadium is due to the RCB announcement at their official website about the free entry pass distribution, leading to the incident."
Thus, the government and judiciary have actively taken steps to thoroughly investigate the RCB stampede tragedy, and more details of the event are expected to emerge soon.
