In a significant development, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to convene its Apex Council meeting on Saturday, June 14. According to Bharat Sharma from PTI, the key agenda of the meeting will be the formulation of clear norms and protocols for Indian Premier League (IPL) victory celebrations.
What Happened In Bengaluru?
The move follows the tragic incident in Bengaluru on June 4, where a stampede during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) title celebrations led to the deaths of 11 people and injuries to over 50 others.
The tragic loss of life has prompted urgent introspection within the BCCI. While the board blamed the mismanagement as the reason for the mishappening. The board sought to distance itself from the organisational failures, asserting that they had no involvement in planning the event. However, the Karnataka government, in a submission to the High Court, has named both RCB and the BCCI as parties responsible for the tragedy.
RCB announced a celebratory bus parade from Vidhana Soudha to the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4. Although the parade was ultimately cancelled, but nearly two lakh fans gathered, resulting in chaos outside the stadium.
