Indian opener Mayank Agarwal is set to play county cricket in England for the first time. He has signed a short deal with Yorkshire and will feature in the last few matches of the County Championship before heading back to India for the Ranji Trophy season.

He will join the Yorkshire squad ahead of their game against Somerset, which begins on September 8 in Taunton and is expected to play three matches during this stint.

The 34-year-old has been in action recently, first in the Maharaja T20 Trophy in Karnataka and earlier in the Indian Premier League, where he was part of Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s title-winning campaign. Notably, he had joined RCB as a late replacement for the injured Devdutt Padikkal.

While Agarwal has plenty of international and domestic experience, this will be his first taste of county cricket. He is familiar with English conditions, having toured the country twice with the Indian Test side and also playing in the 2023 World Test Championship final against Australia.

Back in 2021, he was set to open for India in the England series but had to miss out on the first match after suffering a concussion. However, despite these tours, he has never actually batted in a competitive match in England.

Notably, Agarwal has been one of Karnataka’s most consistent performers across formats. In first-class cricket, he has scored over 8,000 runs with 18 centuries to his name. For India, he has played 21 Test matches, scoring nearly 1,500 runs at an average of over 41, including four hundreds. His best performance came with a double century against South Africa.

In the most recent Ranji season, his returns were modest with 320 runs in seven matches, but earlier this year he led Karnataka to the Vijay Hazare Trophy title, finishing as the tournament’s second-highest run-scorer with 651 runs in 10 games.

By joining Yorkshire, Agarwal becomes part of a growing list of Indian players who have taken part in county cricket this year. Others include Ishan Kishan, Yuzvendra Chahal, Tilak Varma, Khaleel Ahmed, Sai Kishore and Jaydev Unadkat.
