The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) franchise is set to replace outbound women’s head coach Ben Sawyer with Australia’s Luke Williams. The former Australian cricketer has previously coached Adelaide Strikers in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) and was also the assistant coach of Southern Brave in Women’s The Hundred season this year.

Change of guard in RCB

Former South Australian cricketer Luke Williams spent four seasons as head coach of the Adelaide Strikers. Moreover, he coached them to their first-ever title win in the 2022-23 WBBL season.

Williams also worked closely with English legend Charlotte Edwards to lead Southern Brave to their first-ever Women’s The Hundred title.

He has emerged as one of the front-runners to replace Ben Sawyer to command RCB women’s unit from next WPL season, as the franchise aims to reverse their dwindling fortunes. Under Indian batting legend Smriti Mandhana, a star-studded RCB line-up finished fourth out of the five-team WPL 2023 competition earlier this year.

Remarkably, the RCB franchise also swapped their men’s head coach last month. They roped in Zimbabwean great Andy Flower by signing a three-year contract with him, thus replacing Sanjay Bangar in the process.

The former Zimbabwean captain previously coached Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and worked closely alongside team captain KL Rahul. The franchise made it to the playoffs in both seasons under Flower’s influence.
