India Women and Malaysia Women will go up against each other in the first quarter-final of the ongoing 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou. The winner of the match will storm into the first semi-final of the multi-nation event, while the loser will crash out of the competition.

India Women

India Women will enter the 2022 Asian Games off the back of their 2-1 away T20I series win over Bangladesh. The ‘Women in Blue’ thumped their hosts in the first two games to seal the series, before losing out by four wickets in the dead-rubber at Mirpur.

Earlier this year, Harmanpreet Kaur and co. also reached the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2023 in South Africa, where they lost out to eventual winners Australia in a tense final-over thriller. Kaur, meanwhile, will not assume leadership role for the Indian team in their initial 2022 Asian Games as she is currently serving her ban, as imposed by the ICC.

Malaysia Women

The Malaysia Women trounced their Hong Kong counterparts in their solitary Group B match on September 19. The win granted them a date with the Indian team in the quarter-finals, thus setting up only their third ever T20I match against the ‘Women in Blue’.

To date, both Malaysia and India have only faced each other twice in T20Is. The Malaysian Women’s team suffered crashing defeats in both, with their recent shortcoming to Team India occurring during last year’s Asia Cup 2022 in Bangladesh.
