South African opener Quinton de Kock failed to sustain his prolific World Cup 2023 run against India, as the cricketer chopped one onto his own stumps off Mohammed Siraj’s short length delivery.
The in-form batter, taking first guard at the crease alongside opening partner and captain Temba Bavuma, scored just five runs from his 10 deliveries as South Africa got off to a horrid start against table-toppers in their daunting run-chase task.
Notably, before making his way back to the pavilion, Quinton managed to join an elite South African batting club, despite charting a below-par effort.
Quinton de Kock joins ABD, Kallis and Gibbs
Quinton de Kock belted a scorching drive down the ground to notch up his first and only boundary of the evening. Through the course of his effort, the elegant left-hander completed 1,000 runs in his World Cup profile.
The 30-year-old, who is playing his final set of ODIs during the ongoing 2023 World Cup, became only the fourth South African batter in history to score 1,000 runs at the grandest stage of the sport. Former cricketers AB de Villiers, Jacques Kallis and Herschelle Gibbs are the only other Proteas batters to have previously scaled the feat; with Villiers sitting on top of the South African pile with 1,207 World Cup runs to his name.
South African batters with 1,000 or more World Cup runs:
Batsman | Innings | Runs |
---|---|---|
AB de Villiers | 22 | 1,207 |
Jacques Kallis | 32 | 1,148 |
Herschelle Gibbs | 23 | 1,067 |
Quinton de Kock | 25 | 1,000 |
Remarkably, out of Quinton de Kock’s 1,000 World Cup runs, the batting veteran has listed more than half of them in the ongoing event alone. The cricketer is currently leading the run-scoring race among all World Cup 2023 batters, considering the Proteas legend has already minted 550 runs at an imperial average of over 68.
Set to retire from ODIs after the cricketing carnival, the dynamic southpaw has listed four match-winning centuries through the course of his month-long run-fest across several Indian venues.
