Somerset prepares green pitch for Essex clash in County cricket [Source: @SomersetCCC/X.com]
The latest Somerset vs Essex County Championship match became the talk of the cricket world for its lush green wicket. The pitch was so green that it blended into the outfield and looked more like a lawn than a cricket wicket.
In a crucial Division One game of the ongoing County Championship, Somerset hosted Essex at the Cooper Associates County Ground in Taunton.
The host team won the toss and opted to field first. However, what caught the fans’ attention was the pitch and its unusual nature.
Somerset Prepares Rare Green Wicket In County Game
As the Somerset team stepped onto the field in the first session, the pitch of the Cooper Associates County Ground left the fans surprised and baffled at the same time.
The wicket was green with no traces of any brown patch of soil whatsoever. It blended into the colour of the grass and appeared like a lawn. Clearly, the surface was prepared to suit the fast bowlers.
However, Essex’s opener Paul Walter defied the conditions to pull off a textbook cover drive shot and knit a 40-run partnership for the opening wicket with Dean Elgar.

Regardless, Somerset had the last laugh as they bowled out Essex for 206 runs in the first inning.
Beau Webster Joins County Cricket Ahead Of WTC Final
Australian all-rounder Beau Webster will make his debut for Warwickshire against Yorkshire, just weeks before the World Test Championship 2025 final. This move comes at a time when Webster is expected to be part of Australia’s squad for the WTC final scheduled against South Africa at Lord’s Cricket Ground from June 11 to 15.
Webster impressed in his Test debut earlier this year against India, scoring a match-saving 57 in the first innings and an unbeaten 39 in the second to seal the series at the SCG.
