As Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) gear up to host five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) in the two teams' next IPL 2024 bout on Wednesday (March 27), we recall what happened the last time the 'Orange Army' took on their immensely popular rivals in the premier domestic T20 league.

When the 2016 champions last faced-off against their Mumbai counterparts at the fag end of the IPL 2023, it was one of the most important games of the tournament with MI's playoff hopes depending massively on their fortunes on the contest with the Sunrisers.

While the Sunrisers were already eliminated in the race to bag the top 4 slots with just four wins achieved in their previous 13 games, Mumbai required an eighth victory of the season to secure a place in the tournament playoffs.

When MI Last Played Sunrisers During IPL 2023

Needing to break and overcome a 14-point tie with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Rajasthan Royals (RR), who too had seven wins at that point but with a positive NRR and no other game left, MI had to win their last outing of the league stage to pip the two sides and confirm the fourth spot in the ten-team standings.

As it transpired, the then Rohit Sharma-led side won a high-scoring thriller in their den - the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai - as they managed to overhaul Sunrisers' imposing total of 200/5, with allrounder Cameron Green hogging the limelight with his tremendous century.

Green produced an exceptional knock of 100* off just 47 deliveries, including 8 fours and 8 sixes, to completely tilt the scales in his team's favour, allowing MI to ramp home with a jaw-dropping two overs remaining in the game and their eight wickets still intact.

The Australian cricketer's assault was so brutal and enterprising it overshadowed skipper Rohit's majestic 56 off 37 that laid the foundation for Green to relish and dominate the bowling in the high-pressure run-chase.

Earlier in the game, uncapped young seamer Akash Madhwal's 4 for 37 was also instrumental in MI restricting SRH before they could take the game away from their reach despite knocks of great substance from openers Vivrant Sharma (69) and Mayank Agarwal (83).
