The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) might make Jason Gillespie the all-format head coach of the national team if the ongoing white-ball tour in Australia turns out "satisfactory," according to inside sources. Currently, Gillespie, who heads Pakistan's Test squad, has stepped in as coach for the white-ball series, too, following Gary Kirsten's sudden departure.
PCB Considers Jason Gillespie for All-Format Head Coach Role
For now, the PCB is leaning towards making Jason Gillespie the head coach across all formats rather than launching a hunt for new candidates.
"For the moment, the Board is working on a plan to appoint Jason Gillespie as all-format head coach instead of advertising for new candidates," a PCB source told PTI on Thursday.
Pakistan started the ODI series with a close two-wicket loss to Australia in Melbourne on November 4. They have two more ODIs against Australia, the first of which is on Friday in Adelaide and the final one on Sunday in Perth, followed by three T20Is on November 14, 16, and 18.
Decision Expected Before Zimbabwe Tour
The Pakistan squad has a packed schedule, with a tour to Zimbabwe lined up right after the Australia series. If all goes well in Australia, PCB could finalize the decision to hand over the all-format coaching duties to Gillespie before they head to Zimbabwe.
A Shortlist Just in Case
While the PCB's top pick is Gillespie, they've prepared a shortlist of three former Pakistan players, including ex-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq, as backups in case things don't work out with Gillespie.
As the PCB waits to see how the rest of the tour plays out, they're optimistic that Gillespie will agree to take on the role until at least April, if all goes according to plan.
