Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has granted star fast bowler Shaheen Afridi a release from the national Test squad. The leader of Pakistan’s bowling attack was dropped from the playing XI of the second Test against Bangladesh.

The decision, made by the team management, will allow Shaheen Afridi to spend much-needed time with his family following the recent birth of his baby boy, Aliyaar.

Shaheen, who recently shouldered the bowling attack during the first Test at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium from August 20 to 25, was notably absent from the 12-member squad announced for the second Test. In the first Test, the southpaw bowled 32 overs across the two innings and managed just a couple of wickets.

"The team management has decided to release Shaheen Shah Afridi from the Test squad to allow him to spend time with his family," a PCB statement read.

The news of Shaheen Afridi being dropped came in as Pakistan was gearing up for the second clash against Bangladesh at the same venue, with the visitors currently leading the two-match series 1-0.

During a press conference, Pakistan's white-ball head coach, Jason Gillespie, shed light on the rationale behind the decision.

"Shaheen will sit out of this game. I had a good conversation with him, and he fully understands and appreciates the reasoning behind this decision. We're looking for the best combination for this game, and this is our direction," Gillespie had remarked.

Meanwhile, as the curtain rose on the second Test at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, nature had other plans. Persistent rain and a soggy outfield led to the abandonment of the first day’s play.

With Bangladesh holding a 1-0 lead, Pakistan will have their work cut out to level the series once the weather clears.

As the series unfolds, all eyes will be on Pakistan’s performance—and whether the PCB’s controversial decision to bench their fast-bowling spearhead pays off or backfires.
