PCB emergency meeting [Source: @BajwaKehtaHaii/x.com]
Since 2023, Pakistan cricket has witnessed a great downfall, as the Men in Green have crashed out of the group stage in three consecutive ICC events, and the side has witnessed constant chopping and changing of captains and coaches, as there is an instability in the management. The decision-making from the higher authorities has been questionable, and it has affected the performance on the field.
As a result, the Pakistan cricket officials reportedly held a three-hour meeting to address the falling standards of their team in recent years. The side that captured the 1992 World Cup and the 2017 Champions Trophy now looks a pale shadow of its former self, and their brand of cricket has gone down across formats.
Moreover, the performances of their star players has dipped, and none of the big names were included in A Category of the PCB Central Contract list.
What matters were discussed in the Board of Governors meeting?
As per a report by DAWN News, several alarming issues were discussed to revive Pakistan cricket. The meeting was also attended by PCB Chairman, Mohsin Naqvi, as the International Cricket department came under fire for Pakistan’s poor performances on the field. However, Pakistan’s international cricket department defended itself by stating that Pakistan cricket has had four chairmen since 2021, and it has disrupted the management.
Ramiz Raja held the Chairman post from 2021-23, and it was followed by two unsuccessful stints of Najam Sethi, Zaka Ashraf, before Mohsin Naqvi took over in early 2024. Every Chairman had his own ideas, and they made wholesome changes which disrupted Pakistan cricket.
Another matter that was discussed was PCB’s policy of restricting bilateral series to two matches. However, in the meeting, a decision was made to revert back to the traditional three Tests, three ODIs, and as many T20I matches in a series.
Pakistan's poor performances in recent years
In the last few years, Pakistan's cricket standards have gone down. They were eliminated from the 50-over World Cup in 2023, and the Men in Green had the same fate in the T20 World Cup in 2024. The Champions Trophy this year was scheduled in Pakistan/UAE, and the home side once again crashed out of the group stage, as pressure mounted on the board to deliver the goods.
