Participation in foreign leagues by IPL teams leaves BCCI unimpressed

The Indian Premier League was a mega-hit as many became millionaires overnight including Sam Curran, Cameron Green and Ben Stokes who were among the top buys. The fan bases some of the franchises have got has only helped them in getting more popular across the globe.

Due to this reason, they started investing in overseas T20 competitions expanding their wings across the franchise circuit. While all six teams in the SA20 league are bought by IPL franchises, three teams are part of the ILT20 league and CPL.

The foreign investment has caused the IPL stake to dilute, feels BCCI. During the meeting held by the apex body before the auction in Kochi, it was reported that they were unhappy with the teams moving abroad as money might flow out of the country causing IPL to lose its value.

What a team official said regarding the matter

"That was the point. They tried to discourage them from participating in foreign leagues. They understood those who are already there. But they tried to dissuade us from taking such steps in the future. They were suggesting that our presence in foreign leagues could dilute the value of the IPL."

However, IPL chairman Arun Dhumal was asked about the meeting, to which he replied in a safe manner.

"Not really. Other boards have all the right to start their leagues. But we have seen that the IPL is way ahead. A few of them (franchise owners) have interests in other leagues. They have to look after their business interests. We can't stop them. They have money in their kitty, so it is their choice."
