Pakistan's provisional squad for T20 World Cup revealed: Babar Azam in, Shaheen Afridi uncertain

In the latest development, Pakistan has reportedly submitted its provisional T20 World Cup squad for the marquee event next month. All the big names, including Babar Azam, and Shaheen Afridi are included in the team and all the core players from last year have got a place in the provisional squad before the World Cup.

According to Pakistan journalist, Au Rangzeb Younis, the Men in Green have submitted a 16-member squad, with Salman Ali Agha the captain, and Shadab Khan making his return in the T20I side. Several reports have added that Pakistan will officially reveal the final squad once their T20I series against Sri Lanka ends.

Babar included, no place for Rizwan

Babar Azam has been drafted into the provisional squad for the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. Last year, he was dropped from the Pakistan squad due to poor T20I strike rate, but he was brought back in the team and the right-handed batter gets a place in the team.

However, Mohammad Rizwan, the former white-ball skipper was not considered as the player is out of reckoning and the team has gone in with Usman Khan as their main keeper in the side.

Shadab Khan picked as an all-rounder in the squad

Shadab Khan last played for Pakistan in June 2025, and after a long wait, he was picked for the Sri Lanka T20Is, starting this month. He has also been roped in the T20 World Cup squad as Pakistan needed an experienced all-rounder in the side and Shadab is the best bet as the spin-bowling all-rounder has 112 wickets in 112 games.

Apart from him, the other all-rounders in the team are Mohammad Nawaz, and Faheem Ashraf.

Pakistan sweat on Shaheen Afridi's fitness

Shaheen Afridi injured his knee during the ongoing BBL season and he was ruled out of the tournament as Pakistan recalled him. The pacer is currently undergoing intense rehabilitation, and if the reports are to be believed, he is one of the first names on the team sheet, but in case he gets ruled out, Haris Rauf will be picked.

Currently Rauf is not under consideration, but has been picked in the provisional squad keeping in mind Shaheen’s injury.
