In a remarkable end to a storied career, legendary Pakistani umpire Aleem Dar is set to retire from professional umpiring after the ongoing Champions One Day Cup 2024. Dar, who officially retired from international umpiring in March 2023 (as he was removed from ICC Elite panel), continued to officiate in Pakistan’s domestic and international matches within the country, but he has decided to call it quits after this season.

Aleem Dar Set to Hang Up His Hat

The umpiring icon, who has been a fixture on the international cricket scene for nearly two decades, wants to dedicate his time to a noble cause—his thalassemia hospital.

The announcement, confirmed by commentator Tariq Saeed during the Champions One Day Cup game, brings to a close the illustrious career of an umpire who rewrote the record books.

Dar, who was inducted into the ICC Elite Panel of Umpires in 2004, holds the world record for officiating in 448 international matches as umpire. His legacy includes 145 Tests, 231 ODIs, and 72 T20Is, making him one of the most respected figures in the game.

Aleem Dar Career: A Journey of Milestones and Records

Aleem Dar’s career has been nothing short of groundbreaking. Known for his unflinching composure under pressure, Dar officiated in five ICC Men’s Cricket World Cups, seven ICC Men’s T20 World Cups, and five ICC Champions Trophy tournaments.

His resume boasts an impressive array of achievements, including officiating in the finals of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cups in 2007 and 2011, as well as the ICC Champions Trophy in 2009.

He stood in the finals of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cups in 2010 and 2012, solidifying his reputation as one of the best umpires in the world. His presence on the field was a calming influence, and he was often lauded for his ability to handle high-stakes matches with ease.

In 2009, Dar became the first Pakistan umpire to be inducted into the ICC Elite Panel, breaking new ground for his country. He was named the best umpire in the world for three consecutive years from 2009 to 2011, a feat that reflects his consistent excellence. With a sharp eye for detail and a deep commitment to fairness, Dar ensured that the game was always played in the right spirit.

Focusing on A New Chapter

Dar’s decision to retire from umpiring after the Champions One Day Cup comes as no surprise to those who have followed his journey closely. He has long expressed his desire to focus on his thalassemia hospital, a cause close to his heart.

As the curtain falls on his umpiring career, it’s clear that Dar is ready to embark on this new chapter with the same dedication that made him a legend in cricket.
