The Asia Cup 2025 began on September 9 in the UAE, with eight teams competing for the T20 title. This is a special edition because, for the first time, so many teams are part of the tournament. Some sides have faced each other before, while others will be meeting for the very first time in Asia Cup history.

The 17th edition has already kicked off with a bang as Afghanistan defeated Hong Kong in the opening match and then Indian thrashed UAE. Now, let’s take a closer look at the teams that will clash for the first time in this year’s competition.

Pakistan vs Oman

Oman first played in the Asia Cup qualifiers back in 2016, which was also the first T20 edition. However, they didn’t make it to the main tournament then. Now, after almost a decade, Oman are back with hopes of putting up a strong challenge.

On the other hand, Pakistan have been part of the Asia Cup since the very beginning in 1984 and is one of Asia’s cricketing giants. Interestingly, Pakistan and Oman have never faced each other in T20s, so their 2025 clash will be historic.

India vs Oman

India were one of the three founding teams of the Asia Cup in 1984 and even won the inaugural edition under Sunil Gavaskar’s captaincy. Oman, meanwhile, has only recently started to feature in the competition.

So, India and Oman will meet for the very first time in T20 history at the Asia Cup 2025. This makes their matchup one of the most anticipated games in the tournament.

Afghanistan vs Hong Kong

Afghanistan made their Asia Cup debut in 2014 and impressed with their fighting spirit. Hong Kong, meanwhile, first entered the tournament in 2004 but struggled to progress past the group stages.

Even though both teams have been part of the Asia Cup before, this is the first time Afghanistan and Hong Kong are clashing in the competition.

Sri Lanka vs Hong Kong

Sri Lanka, another founding member of the Asia Cup, played the first edition in 1984 and finished as runners-up. Hong Kong, however, entered much later in 2004.

Surprisingly, despite being part of the tournament for years, Sri Lanka and Hong Kong have never played each other before. Their first-ever meeting will happen in Group B of the 2025 edition, which will more excitement to the group stage battles.
