England have revealed their playing XI for the opening Test of the five-match series against India. Chris Woakes is back in the side, while management has made a bold decision to go with Ollie Pope at number 3 over Jacob Bethell.

Ollie Pope started batting at number 3 and found success at that position immediately. However, his form dwindled in 2024, and at the end of the year, Jacob Bethell batted at number 3 against the Kiwis, where he scored three consecutive fifties.

In that series, Ollie Pope batted at number six, and thus, there were reports that England might go with Bethell. However, England have preferred to go with Ollie Pope at 3 for the first Test in Headingley after his 171 against Zimbabwe last year.

He has eight centuries in the format and 15 half-centuries, and he would like to bring more consistency to his game. Jacob Bethell, on the other hand, has hit the fifties in all three Test matches he has played and is likely to play a big part of England's plan in future.
