In a significant development, Shreyas Iyer is all set to return to leadership duties as the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) senior selection committee has decided to appoint former KKR skipper as Mumbai's captain for the upcoming Syde Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
Notably, the elite domestic T20 tournament of India will kickstart from November 23. The selection committee feels that Iyer is the right man to lead Mumbai in the shortest format of the game.
According to a report from Indian Express, It will be Iyer and not Ajinkya Rahane who will be leading Mumbai in the Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy. Earlier, there were reports that Rahane, who is currently captaining Mumbai in the ongoing Ranji Trophy season, will also lead the side in SMAT.
“Iyer will lead the Mumbai T20 side for Syed Mushtaq Ali and Shaw too has been included. Rahane will be playing under Iyer’s captaincy as MCA feels Iyer is the right choice for this format,” a source informed to IndianExpress.
Prithvi Shaw Returns To The Side
Meanwhile, it is also a delight for Prithvi Shaw, who dealt a setback after MCA decided to drop him from the squad owing to his disciplinary and fitness issues.
Nonetheless, fans will witness Shaw back in action and the T20 gametime is necessary for the right-hand batter as IPL 2025 is around the corner
Suryakumar Yadav to headline SMAT
India T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav is set to play domestic cricket, with plans to feature in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024, according to reports. However, Suryakumar will likely miss the opening matches of the tournament due to personal reasons.
“Iyer will lead the Mumbai T20 side for Syed Mushtaq Ali and Shaw too has been included. Rahane will be playing under Iyer’s captaincy as MCA feels Iyer is the right choice for this format,” a source informed.
Meanwhile, stars like Shivam Dube and Musheer Khan are still nursing injuries and won't be a part of Mumbai's squad.
