The Northern Superchargers franchise has been reportedly renamed to Sunrisers Leeds ahead of next year’s The Hundred 2026 season. It is worth noting that the Leeds-based Hundred franchise was acquired by Chennai-based media conglomerate Sun Group.
The Sun Group also owns the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) franchise in BCCI’s lucrative Indian Premier League (IPL), as well as two-time SA20-winning franchise Sunrisers Eastern Cape in South Africa.
Northern Superchargers set for Hundred reboot with new name
As ESPNCricinfo reported, the Northern Superchargers franchise in England will henceforth be called Sunrisers Leeds, a composite identity that aligns the Leeds-based outfit with the Sun Group’s global Sunrisers brand across cricket leagues. The company disclosed the aforementioned information to the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE), in compliance with SEBI regulations, as reported by scanx.trade in November.
A couple of months ago, the Sunrisers Leeds and Northern Super Sunrisers were among the two names considered for the franchise, before the Sun Group eventually opted for the former.
Apart from the Northern Superchargers, other Hundred franchises primed for name changes are the Manchester Originals and Oval Invincibles.
Since Indian multinational conglomerate, RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group, holds a major stake in Manchester Originals, the franchise will likely be renamed to Manchester Super Giants, in compliance with the IPL-based Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) franchise.
Similarly, the South London-based Oval Invincibles will likely be becoming MI London, considering the Reliance Industries Limited purchased stakes of the franchise back in 2024. The Oval Invincibles is also the most decorated franchise in the five-year history of The Hundred so far, having won five titles across both men’s and women’s categories.
The Reliance Industries Limited already owns multiple T20 cricket teams like Mumbai Indians and Mumbai Indians Women in IPL and WPL, the MI Cape Town in SA20, the MI Emirates in ILT20 and the MI New York in MLC.
