Former New Zealand cricketer Martin Guptill has joined the West Indies camp ahead of the five-match T20I series between the two sides in New Zealand. The 39-year-old will be providing “specialist support” to the visiting West Indies team in the first two T20Is of the series at Eden Park in Auckland.
Guptill, who aggregated over 13,000 international runs for New Zealand across all formats, announced his retirement from international cricket earlier this year.
Snubbed and sidelined, Martin Guptill temporarily joins WI
Martin Guptill has joined the West Indies team to provide specialist support ahead of their five-match T20I series against hosts New Zealand. The New Zealand Cricket (NZC) itself confirmed that the legendary opening batter will be lending his services to the visitors in the Eden Park leg of New Zealand’s home series, which includes the first couple of T20Is on November 5 and November 6 of the week-long series.
Through the course of his newfound temporary role, Martin Guptill will be joining hands with one of his yesteryear rivals, former West Indies all-rounder and current head coach Daren Sammy.
The West Indies team, under the leadership of senior wicketkeeper-batter Shai Hope, will be taking on hosts New Zealand in five T20I matches between November 5 and November 13. After thrashing Bangladesh 3-0 away from home, the men from the Caribbean will be looking to sustain their newfound winning momentum to stay in good shape ahead of next year’s 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.
The New Zealand team, on the other hand, recently suffered crushing home series defeats at the hands of Australia and England, both in October last month. Desperate to regain their lost rhythm, the Mitchell Santner-led ‘Black Caps’ group will be eager to turn the tide on home soil.
