The IPL fever is at an all-time high as the 2025 edition is halfway through. Meanwhile, eyes are also on PSL as the tournament, for the first time, is overlapping with IPL for the first time in its history. Notably, the usual window for PSL was pushed by two months as Pakistan hosted Champions Trophy during February.
Since, the IPL and PSL are going on simultaneously, lets look at the three key differences in the playing rules of the two leagues.
1.Impact Sub
The first and foremost difference between the two leagues is the use of impact rule. Notably, IPL follow impact player rule, where they allow teams to replace one player in the match. However, there is no such rule in the PSL.
In the PSL, the playing XI are fixated during the toss and the franchises are not allowed to make any changes to the team.
2.Foreign Player Rule
Another major difference is the rule for foreign players in both leagues. Notably both IPL and PSL allow a team to field four overseas players. However, there is a difference in the minimum cap.
Notably, in PSL, a team has to field minimum one overseas player and they cannot name a team without a foreign player. However, there is no such cap in IPL as a team can field all 11 local players if they want to.
3. Strategic Time-Out
Another key difference is the use of strategic time-out. In IPL, there are two strategic time-outs during an innings as both batting and bowling team can use the time-out from 6-9 and 13-16 overs.
However, in PSL, there is only one strategic time-out and the decision lies in the hands of the umpire, who usually calls for drink and time-out after the 10th over of an innings.
