Pakistan captain Babar Azam wasted away a crucial DRS call after speedster Haris Rauf convinced him to take one during his side’s World Cup 2023 clash against Bangladesh. Turning up for his side at the Eden Gardens, Rauf clipped Mahmudullah on his leg in just his second over of the innings.

The speedster appealed for a wicket, only to be denied by on-field umpire Richard Kettleborough considering the ball was seemingly hitting the pads higher on the wicket. As Pakistan skipper decided to go upstairs, commentator Nasser Hussain criticized the cricketer for wasting away a review and hilariously compared him with former players Shane Watson and Stuart Broad for their similar blunders over DRS calls.

Babar Azam decided to go upstairs for a DRS review after Haris Rauf was denied an LBW against Mahmudullah by the on-field umpire. However, television replays indicated that the ball was going over the leg stump, which subsequently wasted away his review.

The on-air commentator at the time, Nasser Hussain criticized the Pakistani skipper and drew parallels with fellow commentator Shane Watson and bowling legend Stuart Broad, considering the two former cricketers also notoriously wasted away reviews during their playing days. Speaking on Babar’s tendency on crunch DRS calls, Hussain quipped:

“A combination of Stuart Broad and Shane Watson.”

Meanwhile, Mahmudullah was eventually dismissed by Shaheen Shah Afridi for 56. His innings turned out to be the biggest benefactor of Bangladesh’s meagre 204-run effort upfront, as the two sides seek some pride towards the closing stages of their lacklustre World Cup 2023 campaigns.
