In a significant development for cricket fans in Pakistan, it has been reported that there is a possibility of two new teams being added to the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

The Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Najam Sethi, has revealed that there has been high level interest from potential buyers to own two new teams.

While speaking with a YouTube channel, Sethi revealed that he had considered the possibility of new teams in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) but had not yet discussed it with anyone.

He also revealed that it was Javed Afridi, the owner of Peshawar Zalmi, who proposed that Faisalabad and Sialkot could be the two new teams in the league.

Here’s what Najam Sethi said:

“I first thought and didn't discuss it with anyone but I don't know how it comes in the media... So I think Javed Afridi has fired the first shot that Faisalabad and Sialkot will be the two new teams of PSL. We haven't had any discussions with the franchises, we didn't make any decision, but it's my desire that at least two new teams should be added.”

Furthermore, Sethi was quick to acknowledge the genuine concerns raised by the existing six franchises regarding potential revenue loss and its impact on the market, in light of the possible addition of new teams to the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

“There are a lot of comprehension and concerns from the franchises regarding their revenues and how the market can take it or not. And for this, we have to sit and discuss because without them we can't move forward.”

"They have to be part of the consultation process. But what I will say is this, so many people are interested in buying these two teams, and if the addition of these two teams comes in the PSL, then there will be a win-win situation for all.”

Sethi further assured the existing franchises that they would not be at a loss if new teams were added to the tournament. Instead, they could expect to make a profit, and any potential revenue decreases would be carefully examined and addressed by the board.

“The revenue will increase and also teams will increase, and my advice to the other six franchises is that you will not suffer any loss, but you will make a profit from this, and if the revenue decreases, then we will help you in this matter.”

The Pakistan Super League currently comprises six franchisees, including Lahore Qalandars, Multan Sultans, Quetta Gladiators, Peshawar Zalmi, Islamabad United, and Karachi Kings. In 2023, Lahore Qalandars secured their championship title once again.
